Five Patch Fragments + Florals 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

A new project file to play with … so far nothing exciting, but I am interested enough to keep playing, though it is rare for me to cancel a project file once I have found a name.

A very basic design above, but an indication that it could get more interesting.

wrangled a finish from Making A Lather

Rectangle wrangle is finished. I brought it out of the ufo closet in May 2023. I made progress through out the year. I started assembly in July. It was a top in August. I love how it looks and feels. Shirt fabrics are very forgiving, and, so fun to use. Only a few of hubby's old shirts are in this one. The rest are recycled form thrift stores. I see more light than I was expecting while I was making this. I guess that is the magic of using shirt fabrics.

90 x 102 = 27 yards

Rectangle wrangle is ...

fractured top finish from Making A Lather

I added more rows and now fractured squares is sewn together. I made it smaller than the free pattern. I like it, and, it was a good stash buster. I don't think I want to finish it right now. I have several higher priority quilts I am working to finish. I have more blocks that would easily make a cute baby quilt. But, that is for another day.

fractured blocks from Making A Lather

I blogged before about finding an older ufo that I had restarted to assemble. Fractured squares is a free pattern from quilted twins. I was able to finish all the blocks I needed.

Then, I had to see what it was going to look like together...

assemble wrangle from Making A Lather

I am so excited. I have all the blocks done for rectangle wrangle, and, I have started to assemble the top. I think it is going to be a fun quilt to make. Other than playing with the blocks to see how they will look together, I am just sewing twosies.

My One monthly goal for July was to have all 84 blocks finished And, I have met the goal. yipee

I have also played with making the ohio star blocks for the border. I think I have made 4. They are small, and, I need 56 of them. I ...

sugar grove play from Making A Lather

I have these drawers of hsts 2 1/2 inch- finish at 2 inch. Some times, I cut more than I need, or make more than I need. These drawers have been collecting for a long time. I really liked a recent Bonnie Hunter pattern called sugar grove, and, I thought that would be a great pattern to use these little treasures. I had fun digging through the hsts and making plans.

I don't think I will have any trouble finding all the corner/ single hsts for the project. The problem will be finding the matching 5 or 4 ...

fractured squares from Making A Lather

Fractured squares is a free pattern from quilted twins. I have had the pieces cut for awhile, now. I discovered it buried in a pile of UFOS. I decided to make sure it was all there, before, I put it away where it goes. All the pieces were not there. I cut a few more from scraps on the table, but, I was curious to see what it was like to make a block. um.... they were fun and quick. This UFO is not on my 5 quilt list, but, it might have caught my attention. - Might have. Most of ...

downhill side of rectangle wrangle from Making A Lather

I am finally working on the downhill blocks for rectangle wrangle. All of the uphill blocks are finished. I think the remaining strips are a little ho hum, but, I will use them. Apparently, I have pulled out all my favorites.  In such a busy quilt, they will fit just fine.

I want to finish all 42 downhill blocks for my July one monthly goal at elm street quilts.
I didn't finish my june monthly goal but, I did add three ufo finishes for june and the PHD report

wrangle progress from Making A Lather

I have made progress on my rectangle wrangle quilt. I try to make 2 blocks every day. There are 84 blocks, so slow and steady wins the race. I tried to take it with me for a portable project, but, made too many mistakes. It has to stay home. poor baby

With some of the leftover tiny pieces I sewed a little extra to my denim dress.

wrangle progress from Making A Lather

I have been working on rectangle wrangle. I try to make 2 blocks every day. I cut over 400 shirt strips in 2018. After, I sew the strip sets, and, make the tube, I can play with each block. I love shirt fabric, the feel, the colors, the plaids. And, I know the best part will be seeing a whole quilt come together. I think they are always striking. And, any combo of colors will work. I've had this quilt on my list for a long time. Slow and steady, I will work each day. The blocks are divided ...

lucky star block from Making A Lather

I am finished with orange for the rainbow scrap challenge in May.  I made 3 orange stars from batiks to add to the stars I have been doing this year. I made them this morning. I am just getting up too early any more.

The Spring flowers have been beautiful this year. The pink roses are from my Grandmother's garden. I rescued them when I was a child. They are blooming this year just like the year I fell in love with them as a young girl. In front of the them are dame's rocket which is one ...

wrangling more blocks from Making A Lather

I'm still wrangling these blocks for my 5 quilts project. I try to make at least 2 blocks every morning. I need 42 'uphill' blocks. Each one is different, and a fun surprise. I left the tags on some of shirts. I don't know if I will like it or not.

oops I see one that is not right .. sigh

I have a working cart next to my machine that holds all the cut pieces and 'in process' pieces for making the blocks.

new project from Making A Lather

My 5 quilts project needs a lot of cutting. I needed a portable machine piecing project for sewing away from home, that doesn't require a lot of thinking. I opened a new box, and everything is already cut. I have over 400 strips cut and ready to make a Bonnie Hunter rectangle wrangle quilt from her scraps and shirt tails book 2.  Rectangle wrangle is an older 2018 UFO, that, I know I want to finish. It looked simple enough.

I need to make a million strip sets - easy

I need to  sew them into a tube and sub ...

lucky star from Making A Lather

This week I worked on my lucky star blocks in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge this month. I still have a week to go before the end of the month. I may still get to work on my girlie girl.

I have had fabrics pulled for a quilt for a while now. I was not in the mood for piecing, so, I started cutting. I am using recycled shirts, and making a kaliedescope quilt found in this older book. I just needed to cut 4 1/2 inch strips. I have other colors that I still need to cut ...

shirts recycled from Making A Lather

At some point, I started cutting shirts, and, I wanted to organize them. I think it was when I pulled a new UFO project from storage called hand me down. I cut 11 quilt kits - 2 scrappy pinwheels, pineapple blossom, rail fence, 2 ohio star, snails trail, churndash, barnyard split nine, boxed shirts, and take 5. I have a kaliedescope quilt I want to cut.

I cut layer cakes, charm squares, 3 1/2 inch strips, 2 1/2 inch strips, and, I now have a large bag of crumbs and strings. I decided to spend March with my shirt ...

fish school from Making A Lather

I cut and sewed a bunch of HSTS in purple for the rainbow scrap challenge this month .

long chains

And, magically, they turned into fish blocks.

I had cut the QSTS for the box kite border. I had enough light qsts to sew them into twosies.

wool lady table runner from Making A Lather

The next Ufo on my 5 quilt list to do, is a table runner. I bought the kit at a quilt show in Ohio a hundred years ago.

I bought the kit from wooly lady in 2013. Most of the applique was done when I opened the box. There is still a little floss work to be done. The colors are gorgeous, the pattern was really nice. I spent a small fortune on the kit, I don't know why I didn't finish it.

I decided I will just pillow case the gorgeous backing to the front, and call ...

more green from Making A Lather

I don't know the color for April, so, I am showing the last of my March green blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I made Lucky star in green.

I lost my fish school blocks last month. I told all my scraps, that, if, they did not rat out the delinquent fish hsts, that, I would burn all of my scraps and start buying new fabric. There was a snitch, and, now, they are back in custody, and the scraps are once again safe.

It is the end of the month and I checked my progress for the PHD ...

cutting for green projects from Making A Lather

I still can't find my 60 or so hsts in green for fish school. All I have left is a picture of the strips I used to cut them. sad... I hope they are doing fine wherever they are.

I cut the qsts for the border of an older ufo Box kite in green

I cut the pieces I needed for lucky stars in green.

I have not been sewing much this week, so, I feel behind for the for the rainbow scrap challenge in March.

I am off for a sew day today, maybe the mojo will be ...

9 patches in green from Making A Lather

I made 35 nine patches using 2 inch strips for a quilt called diffusion. I am only using 4 -5 colors to make the nine patches. This was the first time the color of the month was one of the colors for the rainbow scrap challenge.

I thought I would have fish school blocks to show this week, but, they swam away. I will need to find a bait that will bring them back to me. Here fishy fishy.

I do have 1, and only 1, strip weave block for the month finished.
